The Dedham Primary School Charity was established in the early 1990s for ‘the advancement of the education of pupils at Dedham Primary School’. Over the years it has made a number of grants to the School out of the income from its modest investments for a variety of purposes. These include the provision of hymn books, the purchase of a TV set, IT software, a laminator, resources for children with special needs, books to support the teaching of religious education, and to pay for themed presentations for the children from external providers. The Charity’s largest single donation to the School in recent years has been a grant of funds towards a new classroom.
Dedham has a long history as a thriving commercial and educational centre. Numerous philanthropic members of the local community over the years have left sums of money to benefit the less fortunate and, historically, these funds have usually been administered by the Vicar and Churchwardens of the Parish. The Dedham Primary School Charity has its origins in the Mary Ann Eyre Charity, alternatively known as The Dedham National School Eyre’s Clothing Charity, the strict purpose for which modern Dedham society no longer has any need. As a result, the objects of the Charity were altered with the consent of the Charity Commissioners. The School, at the request of teaching staff, now receives specific grants from time to time for items that the Trustees consider will make a real difference to educational provision at the School.
In addition to income from its own investments, the Charity also makes grants out of donations made to it for the purpose of benefiting the School. These donations usually come from parents and other private individuals who, by making a donation to the Charity, are able to ensure that Gift Aid is recovered from the Inland Revenue and passed on to the Charity’s only permitted beneficiary, Dedham Primary School.
